When A Dollar Makes A Difference

It's amazing how much difference a dollar can make, and unless you've been a server, you may not even realize.

When I go out to dinner, I tend to tip generously. Not because I have money to throw around, but because I understand that so many customers DO NOT tip well. So many others leave only a few dollars no matter how hard the server works.
It's not just a dollar (or two or three!!) It's the value that you - as the customer - have put on our service.

No other profession allows customers to determine how much a professional makes based on service. Especially when that service is hinged on things outside the server's control.

So as servers, we tend to view the tip as the judgement  - a "hat's off" to a job well done.

For example - Let's assume that you have gone out, the server has been friendly and provided good service. the bill is $33. An appropriate tip may be $6, but many will leave $5. A server would be excited about a $7 tip, though. It just might make the rest of the night go a little easier.

And in all honesty - what exactly were you planning to do with that extra $1 or $2? Would it be worth it to leave it just to know you made someone smile?

Having been on the other side of the situation.... I say yes - It's totally worth it.
